Social Media Optimization (SMO)

You’ve optimized your website for the search engines, but is your site social media friendly? Have you added all of the features that will get your site noticed around the social networks?

Social Media Optimization (SMO) Defined
The concept behind Social Media Optimization (SMO) is simple: optimize a site so that is is more easily linked to, more highly visible in social media searches, and more frequently included in relevant posts on blogs and other similar social media channels.

5 Ways to Implement SMO

  1. Increase your linkability: Content is king! Having fresh content that’s updated frequently is more important than ever. Whether it’s blog posts, white papers and press releases, linkbait or aggregated content, make sure your website isn’t static.
  2. Make tagging, bookmarking and subscribing easy: Adding the appropriate buttons to your website makes sharing the information easier. Want a blog post to go viral? Embed the Facebook “like” button within the post. Need more readers? Make it easy for them to subscribe. Give readers the ability to share, and they will.
  3. Reward inbound links: Create a blogroll for sites that link back to your site or include a shout out to them in a future post. It’s a community!
  4. Help your content travel: Make your content portable by uploading PDFs, sharing YouTube videos from your channel, or creating an embeddable infographic.
  5. Encourage the mashup: Let others use your content (within reason). Share your online videos, syndicate your content, and allow guest bloggers to make your site better.
